MaineGeneral Merges Two Hospital Campuses

CBRE and MaineGeneral Medical Center announced that on Saturday, Nov. 9, MaineGeneral successfully merged two hospitals into MaineGeneral’s new Alfond Center for Health.

The new 192-bed facility is located in North Augusta, Maine on the site of the Harold Alfond Center for Cancer Care. The facility consolidates all inpatient services from MaineGeneral’s two existing campuses in downtown Augusta and Waterville into one regional facility, the Alfond Center for Health. The new facility provides all outpatient care, previously offered by the downtown Augusta campus, in addition to several physician practices. Administrative offices and support services also relocated to the new facility.

The 120 patients were moved from MaineGeneral’s Waterville and East Chestnut Street campus beginning at 7 a.m. The move was completed seamlessly in just under eight hours.

“We knew this would be a complex process, with hundreds of details. To ensure things ran smoothly, we turned to CBRE, experts in the field of the whole range of facility transition,” said Paul Stein, chief operating officer at MaineGeneral Medical Center.

“Working with CBRE from the outset on all the behind-the-scenes planning made for an almost seamless transition. Their team was there every step of the way, from the sequencing of the department moves, to making sure all the equipment was delivered on time and in place when needed, to helping with training and to plotting details of the actual move. The CBRE team was key during one of our most challenging, yet exhilarating times,” Stein added.

CBRE Healthcare, legacy KLMK Group, Inc., provided facility activation solutions to MaineGeneral, which included transition and activation planning, transition budget development, relocation services, workflow and orientation training, move plan development and management and patient mock moves and staff move day training.

“The move could not have gone any better,” stated Steve Higgs, managing director for CBRE Healthcare. “The staff training and mock moves were extremely helpful leading up to the move day. Teams were extremely prepared, which ultimately led to a successful move.”
