EwingCole Designing Role III Hospital at Bagram Airfield
PHILADELPHIA, Pa. — EwingCole, one of the nation’s leading architecture, engineering and interior design firms, is designing a new hospital at Bagram Airfield, Afghanistan. This is the first task order to be awarded through EwingCole’s Medical Facilities A-E Services contract with the United States Army Corps of Engineers, Huntsville.
“EwingCole is honored to be supporting our nation as part of Operation Enduring Freedom,” said EwingCole’s principal John Capelli, AIA. “The design of this new hospital supports not only our nation’s mission but also the latest research in the medical treatment of our military.”
The new 71,000-square-foot medical facility will contain an emergency department, intensive care unit, surgical suite, radiology, laboratory, pharmacy, intermediate care ward, contingency aeromedical staging facility, offices and common areas.
Designed for high efficiency and optimized patient flow, the hospital will allow U.S. and Coalition Forces to receive care in a facility equal to those in the U.S. with the added distinction of having improved protection from the typical hazards of a battlefield environment. This facility will also be used to treat numerous patients from the local towns and villages, Afghanistan National Police and Afghanistan National Army personnel.
“This hospital will provide our Service’s medical community a first-class facility that matches the first-class care they already provide,” stated LTC David Giles, Task Force Health Facility Planner. “Additionally, the care received by the Afghan population, as well as the Coalition Forces, reinforces the goodness of the American people.”
Adhering to an extremely aggressive schedule, this project is anticipated to begin construction in the first quarter of 2012 and be complete in November of 2013.
EwingCole has designed many projects for the US government, including the GSA, USDA, NASA and mission critical BRAC projects for the US Navy and the US Army including the US Military Academy at West Point.
