MOBILE, Ala. — Providence Hospital recently announced the completion of a chiller plant project which is expected to reduce the west Mobile facility’s energy use by 20 percent, according to hospital leaders.

“This facility is capable of cooling 450 mid-sized homes on a hot day . . . or one Providence Hospital,” said Robert “Bob” Thompson, BSE, CHFM, BOC, Providence director of facilities, plant operations and grounds. “It uses three 750-ton chillers with four towers that cool water to 42 degrees, feeding 24 air handlers throughout the hospital and the ambulatory building,” Thompson said.

Advanced technology in the plant automates monitoring of the heating load in the building and controls chilled water delivery. This will save Providence approximately 20 percent on monthly utility costs.

“As with our ongoing project to reconfigure lighting in our facilities, this new chiller plant is part of Providence’s commitment to being a good steward of our environment and resources, while managing healthcare costs,” said Clark Christianson, president and CEO of Providence Health System.
