Sanford Announces Plans for New Breast Health Center

SIOUX FALLS, S.D. — Sanford Health will break ground on an integrated breast health building at its Sioux Falls, South Dakota campus this fall. The Edith Sanford Breast Center will combine research and clinical care for women across the region.

Edith1_217X142Construction is scheduled to be completed in early 2017.

The three-story, 48,000-square-foot facility will be connected to the current Sanford Cancer Center and VanDemark Building. Portions of the Sanford Cancer Center and VanDemark Building will also be renovated, though services in those areas will be uninterrupted during that time.

“As our patient and family requests and needs continue to grow, it is important we explore methods to take advantage of innovations and advances in cancer care,” said Paul Hanson, president of Sanford USD Medical Center.  “The Edith Sanford Breast Center will blend science, genetics, research and clinical expertise in one building.”

Because of its location on 18th street and additional entrances on 17th street, patients and families will enjoy quick, easy access for visits. In addition to serving the patient, the facility was designed with needed support space for family and caregivers.

The Sanford BioBank, which serves as a library for researchers to make discoveries in breast cancer and other diseases, will also be housed in the new building. The BioBank will have space for clinical and laboratory research staff, offering patients a location to enroll and providing support for clinical trials and genomic analysis taking place at Sanford USD Medical Center.
