Topping Off Ceremony Held for Chinese Hospital Replacement Project
DPR recently topped off the new $106-million, 100,000-square-foot Chinese Hospital in San Francisco, Calif. Jacobs Engineering Group Inc. serves as the project’s architect. The project is slated for completion in 2016.
The original Chinese Hospital—built in 1925 and birthplace to Bruce Lee—was an iconic structure in San Francisco’s most densely populated neighborhood. To make way for the new, seismically sound acute care hospital, the structure was demolished.
The project team is working on an extremely tight urban site in the middle of Chinatown to deliver the ground-up replacement hospital. The hospital includes 54-bed acute care and 22-bed skilled nursing facilities. Adjacent to the project site, the 1979 hospital addition is operational and active, taking patients throughout construction of the new hospital.
The bustling neighborhood is also home to fish and produce markets, which require several deliveries a day, close to the construction site. Communication has been key for the project team; keeping neighbors and local vendors abreast of construction activities has been an integral part of the project.
