Sundt Construction, Inc. has completed a single-level, 54,000-square-foot inpatient rehabilitation hospital in Scottsdale, Ariz., supporting 50 private patient rooms and serving a variety of acute needs.

Scottsdale Healthcare Rehabilitation Hospital is a member of the Select Medical network of rehabilitation hospitals. Sundt, serving as the general contractor and construction manager, built the facility for GlobalRehab, which later joined Select Medical. GSR Andrade served as the project architect.

Designed for a 17,000-square-foot vertical expansion to accommodate 25 additional beds, the project also included the construction of a pharmacy that meets advanced federal standards for facilities that prepare medications used in treating cancers and other illnesses. The project team created ante rooms, HEPA-filtered spaces with more than 40 air changes per hour and laminar flow around the chemical fume hood to meet the requirements of a Class 10,000 clean room.

The team also used Evidence-Based Design principles to produce a quieter facility. In order to reduce noise from air-handling systems into the patient spaces, project specifications incorporated high-density structural concrete under the air-handling units that not only absorbs and reflects noise, it also reduces vibration transmission from air-handling equipment into the structure and the patient space.
