Kicking off the 2025, patients were transferred Jan. 19 to Altru Health System’s new 552,000-square-foot replacement hospital in Grand Forks, North Dakota. The project broke ground in 2019 and key features include 226 patient beds, a 16-bed observation unit and room for future expansion. The project team included JLG Architects and joint venture PCL/Community Contractors.
Patients and visitors will benefit from the latest technologies, an abundance of natural light and improved signage and navigation throughout the facility. In addition, the hospital’s design eliminates staff inefficiencies, allowing caregivers to spend more time with patients. Other features include a negative pressure unit, private NICU rooms and behavioral health crises rooms in an expanded emergency department.
The project team will soon begin demolition of the old hospital and begin building a patient/guest parking lot, as well as another water retention pond; this project phase will be completed within two years. The old hospital campus will ultimately be transformed into a green space, featuring over 3,000 plants, shrubs and trees, plus walking paths and ponds. Learn more about the project here.
