Martha’s Vineyard Hospital Primary Care Internal Medicine Suite Receives Facelift

Martha’s Vineyard Hospital recently reopened upon completion of renovations to approximately 7,000 square feet of underutilized area in an existing building to expand its primary care services. An island that has steadily elevated in profile since the 1960s, the Vineyard has had a slow but steady population growth while protecting its authentic, natural environment along the way.

With 16 new exam rooms and multiple spacious offices for care providers, the new MVH Primary Care Internal MEdicine Suite affords much-needed added space for hospital workers and the community they serve. To establish an innovative, new workplace dynamic and care model, doctors and nurses, along with nurse practitioners and their assistants, are now also working side by side in the same offices as a result of the renovation.

The restorative powers of nature that surround the hospital were the initial inspiration for the primary care suite’s design. Upon entering the facility, the experience is influenced using color and forms that are reminiscent of elements that surround the facility: water, sand and stone. Natural light fills the patient/family support area where seating is provided, should waiting be required. And, with direct access to the hospital’s rear parking lot, the unit is designed to feel as accessible as a walk-in clinic, even amidst the 25-bed acute care hospital complex environment.

The project team included architecture and engineering firm HED, and general contractor Columbia Construction Company.
