NUMC building ext 04 med REAST MEADOW, N.Y. – General contractor Stalco Construction and DIGroupArchitecture have begun an extensive, $815,000 renovation and upgrade of a cardiac catheterization laboratory at the Nassau University Medical Center in East Meadow, N.Y.  DIGroupArchitecture designed the new laboratory and support facilities.

“Located on Level 2 of NUMC’s Dynamic Care Building, the renovated 1,500-square-foot space will house a main cath lab, control room, doctor’s office, scrub room, two monitored beds for patient preparation, storage rooms, staff lounge and bathrooms,” explained Stalco Principal Kevin G. Harney.

Dr. Amgad N. Makaryus, MD, FACC, FACP, FASE, FSCCT, chairman, Department of Cardiology at NuHealth/Nassau University Medical Center, welcomed the upcoming upgrades. “The Department of Cardiology at NUMC is very excited to employ a new cardiac catheterization lab that will feature the latest in imaging technology and provide a comfortable, spacious environment for both patients and medical staff.  This cutting-edge medical technology will allow us to provide top-notch care to all of our patients undergoing cardiac catheterization.”

Managed by NuHealth, NUMC is a 530-bed Level I Trauma Center and tertiary care teaching hospital affiliated with the North Shore/LIJ Health System and the Health Sciences Center of the State University of New York at Stony Brook.  The 19-story medical center, located in East Meadow, N.Y., is the tallest building in Nassau County.

According to DIGroupArchitecture Partner and Director of the Healthcare Design Studio Robert Ryan, associate AIA, “The client’s functional requirements included accommodating the new imaging equipment and improving the efficiency of the lab’s layout in order to create additional support spaces.”

The designers developed a new layout that accommodated additional building systems necessary for the new equipment to be installed in the space.  Several of the partition walls were re-utilized, which reduced the construction cost.  A more economical floor plan will allow the hospital to create a new staff lounge.

Interior finishes and fixtures will include a protective lead lining of the cath lab walls; welded-seam sheet vinyl flooring in the treatment and scanning areas and vinyl composition tile floors in other spaces; acoustical tile ceilings; recessed fluorescent lighting fixtures; custom millwork storage cabinets and vanities with laminate countertops; painted drywall partition walls and oxygen, air and vacuum lines.

Stalco will also install new HVAC, plumbing and electrical systems, as well as a new process chiller on the building’s roof to address the increased heat load of the new imaging system.

In addition to general contractor Stalco and architect and interior designer, DIGroupArchitecture, the project team includes construction manager SCC Construction Management Group.
