September marks the completion of the first phase of Sentara Virginia Beach General Hospital’s $49-million modernization project—the consolidation and restyling of the hospital’s three separate Intensive Care Units into one state-of-the-art, 24-bed ICU, located in Virginia.

The opening of the Reed W. Kelley Intensive Care Unit means the hospital’s critical care team will no longer be divided amongst three units on two floors. They will all be working together in one advanced, centralized space.

The ICU team will also have direct access to operating rooms and the emergency department through use of two new elevators. Overall, these upgrades allow for greater synergy amongst team members, collaboration and efficiency. Patients will be moved to the new unit on Sept. 19.

The hospital embarked on this journey a little over a year ago with the intent to expand and modernize the facility to meet the growing needs of the community. The completion of the entire project is anticipated in 2020.

Whiting-Turner served as general contractor and Kahler Slater as architect.
