NASHVILLE, Tenn. –Gresham, Smith and Partners announces the completion of the 200,000-square-foot North Tower for John D. Archbold Memorial Hospital in Thomasville, Ga. Established in 1925, Archbold Memorial is the flagship hospital of Archbold Medical Center’s healthcare provider system. The GS&P-designed eight-story tower addition includes 96 med-surg beds and 18 ICU beds with a shelled space for the addition of six ICU beds. The project is structured to allow for future vertical expansion to support the hospital’s continued growth.
The new tower provides an expanded emergency department, which includes 11 general exam rooms and four fast-track exam rooms, along with critical care treatment rooms and two trauma bays. The second-floor houses six surgical operating rooms supported by associated Pre-Op, PACU and central sterile areas. In addition to the new tower construction, the existing lobby and adjoining support spaces were renovated.
GS&P’s design services for Archbold included architecture, interior design, engineering, landscape architecture and site planning. On the exterior, the new tower features arches and a red clay-tile roof that complement the campus vernacular of other Archbold facilities.
On the interior, the design
balances traditional Georgian décor with Archbold’s signature Mediterranean style by using a warm palette of golds, browns, ochres and other earth tones. With a goal of updating the lobby from its previous 1980s renovation, the new lobby renovation incorporated wood and stone accents, terrazzo flooring and unique, iron light fixtures fabricated by local metals artist Fred Eubanks. The incorporation of an energy-efficient skylight further enhances the renovation by providing access to sunlight for patients and guests as they enter the building. Lighting sensors throughout the building and a high-efficiency HVAC system support efforts to make the facility more energy-efficient.
To support the new North Tower, an addition to the hospital’s Central Energy Plant was required to support and supplement the building infrastructure. GS&P successfully completed the complex addition while ensuring that all existing HVAC and electrical systems remained operational during the tower construction.
