Middlesex Hospital Opens New Diagnostic and Imaging Suite Designed By SLAM
MIDDLETOWN, Conn. – Middlesex Hospital opened its doors to the renovation of a 4,393-square-foot Diagnostic and Imaging Suite this fall. The D&I Suite, designed by The S/L/A/M Collaborative, comprises a newly implemented 714-square-foot hybrid catheterization laboratory that combines the traditional diagnostic functions of a cardiac cath lab with the added functions for vascular surgery.
The D&I Suite includes three patient holding bays for preparation and recovery, a special procedures room and all the necessary patient care and support spaces. The hybrid cath lab was designed in alignment with various departmental needs including those of cardiologists, anesthesiologists and vascular specialists and serves various layouts for each scenario. During the planning and design process, SLAM understood the respective roles of each team of medical professionals and provided a layout that was sufficient for their work flow while balancing each of the team’s requirements.
SLAM has worked closely with Middlesex Healthcare System for over 20 years in the planning and design of a multitude of projects on their main hospital campus in Middletown, Connecticut, as well as offsite locations. The D&I Suite commences the extensive renovation of the hospital’s Diagnostic and Imaging department throughout the ground floor of the hospital.
Meanwhile, as part of an ongoing effort to enhance patient satisfaction and staff efficiencies directed toward the hospital’s North building, the sixth floor was completed in January and the fourth floor also recently opened in September marking the completion of the extensive renovation of the patient bed floors. This unit includes 23 beds with 17 private rooms, three semi-privates and one isolation room. The third floor of the West building also recently completed which included full cosmetic upgrades to the hospital’s maternity wing including the waiting room area and nursery. Whiting-Turner Contracting Company served as the construction manager for the D&I Suite and renovations to the patient bed floors.
Middlesex Hospital also recently broke ground on a new Cancer Center designed by SLAM featuring a state-of-the-art linear accelerator. The new facility is located at the Shoreline Medical Center in Westbrook, Connecticut, which received the Press Ganey Guardian of Excellence Award for patient satisfaction this year.
