A recent tour took place of the Santa Clara Valley Medical Center’s new Sobrato Pavilion to provide members of the news media an update on the progress of construction of the county of Santa Clara, California’s newest medical facility. Jeffrey V. Smith, county executive, and Peter Davoren of Turner Construction Company, provided the update and led tours of the Sobrato Pavilion. Paul Lorenz, CEO of Santa Clara Valley Medical Center also provided information to reporters.

Sobrato Pavilion is a culmination of nearly a decade of community support to improve health services in Santa Clara county. The building will include:

    • 168 private patient rooms with the latest technology, including a patient lift system that allows for moving patients from their bed to their restroom.
    • State-of-the art rehabilitation center for spinal cord and brain injury units. The rehabilitation center’s therapy services will include aquatic therapy pool with a gait pool to monitor a patient’s progress; a terrain park so patients can safely re-learn everyday skills such as walking on curbs, stairs and slippery or uneven surfaces, or acquire skills to navigate a wheelchair on various surfaces and a therapy gym with a ZeroG patient lift system that provides support for patients during therapy sessions.
    • Features for Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design gold certification: Enhanced exterior wall system to minimize heat loss and gain and improve patient and staff comfort; low-VOC building materials to reduce indoor air pollution; water efficient plumbing fixtures; three green roof areas to reduce surface water runoff and improve views from patient rooms; recycling of a high percentage of construction waste; use of sustainably harvested wood; healthy, energy-efficient ventilation system and landscape design to minimize irrigation. With LEED Gold certification, SCVMC would be the first public hospital in the nation to obtain this national standard.

Construction is scheduled to be completed in 2017.
