Pediatric Medical Psychiatric Unit to Open at Corewell Health Helen DeVos Children’s Hospital

Corewell Health Helen DeVos Children’s Hospital plans to open a pediatric medical psychiatric unit — the first in Michigan — this spring. The new unit will treat behavioral health pediatric patients with additional medical complexities.

The 12-bed unit, located within Helen DeVos Children’s Hospital, will provide patient-centric care in a healing environment. Patients will be cared for by a multidisciplinary team of psychiatrists, psychologists, medical physicians, social workers, child life specialists, nurses, chaplains and pharmacists, all working together to develop an individualized, comprehensive plan to treat medical and behavioral needs.

The unit is supported by $5 million from the state of Michigan and an additional $4 million in community donations. The project team includes HKS and The Christman Company.

“There is a critical need for behavioral health services nationwide, and we’re thrilled to be able to offer this exceptional service to the pediatric patients in Michigan,” said Subodh Jain, M.D., vice president and department chief, behavioral health, Corewell Health. “In addition to enhancing collaboration with our community partners, this new unit will provide a better experience for both patients and team members.”
