Northwell Health officials gathered recently to open the doors of its new 40,000-square-foot Florina Cancer Center located at the Staten Island University Hospital in New York. Designed by NK Architects, the facility is a critical component of the Northwell Health Cancer Institute’s mission to provide comprehensive treatment and care to cancer patients across the Staten Island community, which has the highest cancer rates of any borough in New York City.
The project entailed the renovation of existing space, as well as a vertical expansion resulting in a cancer center that integrates advanced technology unifying the full spectrum of cancer services for Northwell Health. The Florina Cancer Center will serve both adults and children. In addition, there is a separate six-bay pediatric infusion unit adjacent to the 27-bay adult infusion unit.
The design team collaborated with clinicians to re-examine workflow to provide the best efficiencies and layout for supplies to be quickly accessed and restocked. With access to nature being the main design driver, the design team worked closely with Northwell Health to integrate daylighting and nature-based materials to encourage a comfortable healing environment for all patients.
The project team included: MG Engineering D.P.C. , Gilsanz Murray Steficek, Ellana Construction Consultants, CBA Elevator Consultants, Derosier Engineering, Medical Equipment Resources, LTD, STV Project Management, Central Construction Group and Plaza Construction.
