Trinity recently opened MedStar Health at Lafayette Centre. MedStar Health is a $5-billion not-for-profit healthcare system in and around the Washington, D.C. area. The new 122,000-square-foot multi-specialty care center brings the latest technologies and top healthcare experts together to provide the best treatment available in the downtown capital. The facility opened earlier this fall.

The state-of-the-art medical facility will provide comprehensive, coordinated medical care with expert specialists from MedStar Georgetown University Hospital and MedStar Washington Hospital Center, as well as rehabilitation experts from MedStar National Rehabilitation Network.

The MedStar project at Lafayette Centre consists of an ambulatory tower and a Sports Medicine and Performance Enhancement Center. The ambulatory tower includes the renovation of five floors, 81,600 square feet of an existing 10-story tower known as Building 2 at Lafayette Centre. The project includes an outpatient surgery floor, diagnostic floor and specialty clinics.

The Sports Medicine and Performance Enhancement Centre includes the renovation of three floors, 20,600 square feet of an existing building tower known as Building 1. The new space will include an orthopedic center, rehabilitation and wellness center that will specialize in sports medicine and performance enhancement for local community sports and local professional sports teams.

The challenge was where and how to find a location in an already congested and overbuilt downtown. Trinity had been working with MedStar on their master planning and considered several criteria: location, access and parking, branding opportunities, functionality, infrastructure and economics. The clear winner was the office buildings 1 and 2 at Lafayette Centre between 20th and 21st streets in the northwest part of the city.

The general contractor was HITT Contracting, Inc. Trinity served as architect on Building 1, and partnered with Smith Group as architect of record on Building 2.
