BANGOR, Maine – The Eastern Maine Medical Center family and members of the community recently came together to celebrate the opening of EMMC’s Penobscot Pavilion with a ribbon-cutting ceremony.
The event marks one of the greatest milestones for healthcare in the region. EMMC, which has been delivering healthcare to Mainers for nearly 125 years, has a special mission, proudly serving those who rely on the hospital for intensive care for newborns, heart and vascular care, trauma care, and many other specialty services.
“Our patients and visitors will benefit from the most modern, patient-focused building we could create, starting at the front door, where they will enjoy easy access to some of the most-visited areas of the hospital through our new main entrance and lobby,” says Deborah Carey Johnson, president and CEO of EMMC. “Private rooms for adults include modern technology that enhances comfort and convenience. Our tiniest patients will have the best chance to thrive in our new neonatal intensive care unit.”
The Penobscot Pavilion is not only going help caregivers better serve the community, it was built by the community. Ninety percent of the construction dollars were spent in Maine, and 200 to 300 workers were onsite at any given time. The building also incorporates the work of many area artisans.
EMMC officially opened the new main entrance, NICU and cardiac care unit on June 7. EMMC’s Modernization Project continues through 2017 with new surgical suites, consolidated inpatient and outpatient heart and vascular care services and a renovated labor and delivery space.
MorrisSwitzer Environments for Health was the architect on the project, and Cianbro/Brasfield & Gorrie served as the construction management team.
