MURRAY, Utah – Construction was completed of the new hybrid OR and second floor surgery suite at Intermountain Medical Center in Murray, Utah on Aug. 14. The new hybrid OR allows surgeons to perform interventional radiology with traditional surgical functions of the operating room all in one place.
The $1-million project scope included complete demolition of two existing operating rooms to make the needed space for a single OR to accommodate the surgical team and equipment required for the complex procedures. There can easily be 5-8 people in the room in addition to support staff in the control room during an operation. The layout of the imaging equipment, and the relationship between the OR, the control room, the nurse desk and storage area, drove the design.
The design team worked with the doctors and nurses for two months through various layout iterations and room adjacency combinations until the right setup was achieved. At one point, a full-size mock-up was built with actual surgical equipment for props, so the physicians and nurses could test the design concept. This mock-up, along with a site visit to the recently completed hybrid OR at McKay Dee Hospital, helped solidify the design.
While the size of a typical large OR is around 600-700 square feet, this hybrid OR with control room is 1,060 square feet, plus additional space for an equipment room and substerile support space. The total project involved 1,700 square feet of remodel.
This is TSA Architects’ second hybrid OR design for Intermountain Healthcare. Construction was completed by Okland Construction.
