NEW YORK, N.Y. — Lend Lease recently celebrated the opening of Winthrop-University Hospital’s New Research and Academic Center in Mineola, New York. Lend Lease served as construction manager for the five-story, 135,000-square-foot, state- of-the-art science and education center, which contains laboratories, a clinical trial center, classroom space for medical students and space for community programming.

The Center will conduct research and scientific trials on diabetes, obesity, cardiometabolic disorders, infant prematurity, perinatal conditions, chronic disease and aging. In addition, the Center will conduct community programming focused on reducing premature births, treating conditions related to aging, treating issues related to Alzheimer’s and studying the prevention and treatment of osteoporosis.

“At Lend Lease, our vision is to create the best places and I believe this Center will live up to our vision and provide the local community a vital healthcare resource,” said Joseph Maraia, Lend Lease principal in charge of healthcare. “I want to take the time to thank Winthrop-University Hospital, Dewberry, Group PMx, Perkins Eastman, Br+A, Bowen and our Lend Lease project team for completing this project safely and on time.”

In addition to being a cutting-edge research facility, the Center will be one of the most sustainable buildings in the area. The design incorporates sustainable features such as a green roof, a water retention and treatment system, and is designed to create a high-performance workspace that fosters collaboration between diverse scholars and clinicians. The Center will have an open stair, uniting the floors and providing occupants access to a third-floor meeting area to inspire conversation and collaboration.

Lend Lease’s New York Healthcare Division has successfully completed over 324 projects with a constructed value in excess of $3.8 billion throughout New York City’s greater metropolitan area. These projects have encompassed over 9.4 million square feet of healthcare facilities. Lend Lease has completed projects for New York area healthcare providers such as Beth Israel Medical Center, Memorial Sloan-Kettering Cancer Center, Mount Sinai Medical Center, New York University Langone Medical Center, New York Presbyterian Hospital and North Shore – Long Island Jewish Health System.
