MultiCare Health System will break ground on a new hospital in Covington, Wash. in fall of 2014, improving access to healthcare services in South King County. The new hospital will open in late 2016.

“We are excited to bring additional options for healthcare to South King County,” said Diane Cecchettini, R.N., president and CEO of MultiCare Health System. “We’ve been committed to this community for more than 20 years and are proud to strengthen our partnership with the residents of Covington and surrounding areas.”

Initially, MultiCare will build a 24-bed, three-story hospital with the potential to expand to 58 beds. Services will include orthopedics, general surgery, ear, nose and throat (ENT), urology, pediatric outpatient surgery and other services.

The Covington hospital will further augment MultiCare’s integrated network of primary, urgent care and specialty care clinics in Federal Way, Maple Valley, Kent and Auburn; and the MultiCare Auburn Medical Center, which MultiCare acquired in 2012. Over the past 20 years, MultiCare has continued to invest in new services and technology in Covington to meet the needs of South King County’s growing population. In 2012, the health system opened an emergency department adjacent to its Covington Clinic. The hospital will be built adjacent to the emergency department.

The Covington Medical Center will be the sixth hospital in MultiCare’s integrated health system, which includes MultiCare Auburn Medical Center, MultiCare Tacoma General Hospital, MultiCare Mary Bridge Children’s Hospital & Health Center, MultiCare Allenmore Hospital and MultiCare Good Samaritan Hospital.

MultiCare is among the area’s largest providers of healthcare services, serving patients at more than 130 sites of care in Pierce, South King, Kitsap and Thurston counties.
