Design Underway for East Tennessee Children’s Hospital
Shepley Bulfinch is completing conceptual design for a major expansion and renovation project for East Tennessee Children’s Hospital in Knoxville, Tenn.
This 317,000-square-foot lateral hospital expansion and renovation implements the hospital’s strategic master plan, significantly upgrades its facilities and enhances its visibility as the region’s only comprehensive regional pediatric center. The project is targeting completion in 2016.
The 152-bed expansion focuses on elevating level of service, right-sizing existing programs, providing programmatic flexibility for inpatient and outpatient services and enhancing patient- and family-centered care. The 245,000-square-foot addition will house a 48-bed all-private NICU with amenities that include a family suite, resource center and roof gardens that offer patients and families respite and access to natural light.
Following completion of the addition, 71,900 square feet of the existing hospital will be renovated and re-purposed to better accommodate major program elements and all-private patient rooms. Relocating the NICU to the new facility will give the existing PICU much-needed space to grow and to consolidate scattered program elements.
Shepley Bulfinch is designing the project in association with BarberMcMurry architects. Shepley Bulfinch was also responsible for program re-aggregation, reorganization and right-sizing of the building.
The ETCH expansion is the latest in a number of pediatric healthcare projects for Shepley Bulfinch. The firm’s other current pediatric clients include Boston Children’s Hospital, Children’s Hospital of Michigan and Women and Children’s Hospital of Buffalo, where the firm is completing a replacement children’s hospital.
