CHAPEL HILL, N.C. — Choate Construction has been selected for the renovation to a portion of the third bed tower at University of North Carolina Health Care’s Memorial Hospital.

The original facility dates back to the 1950s and has only received cosmetic upgrades since that time. Designed by MHAworks, the project involves complete demolition of the existing space to allow for the construction of 24 modern patient rooms. Each room features integrated medical headwalls, isolated power panels and private restroom facilities.

In addition to the patient facilities there are staff offices, conferences rooms, medical support rooms and mechanical spaces. The scope also includes a replacement of a section of the existing hospital roof that has aged and will also accommodate mechanical upgrades. The building systems renovation of the project includes the addition of a custom air handler to serve the patient space.

The renovation will be performed while the hospital remains fully operational. Work is expected to begin in early June and be completed by late February 2014.
