Teams, Sponsors Sought for AIA Student Healthcare Charette

AIA Chicago, in partnership with The CARITAS Project and the AIA Chicago Healthcare Knowledge Community (CAIA HCKC), are offering the 2013 Chicago AIA Student Healthcare Charette.

This year’s charette challenge is based on the concept of Generative Space: “Creating Generative Space environments, for an aging population, which create ‘a place to flourish’® throughout the continuum of experience.” Generative Space is a design philosophy heralded by Dr. Wayne Ruga of The CARITAS Project.

Academic teams from a number of schools around the world are invited to participate. Each team will be made up of up to three students. The assistance of one professor/administrator is recommended. Each team is encouraged to have a diverse educational background, including: architecture, interior design, art and public healthcare.

The charette work will take place Sept. 28-30. Following this, all teams will have an opportunity to present lessons learned and showcase work at the 2013 Healthcare Facilities Symposium and Expo Sept. 30-Oct. 3 in Chicago, Ill. The charette will take place in a number of locations around the city of Chicago. Each team will also benefit from being hosted by a design/building firm. Each firm will provide breakout space for the team’s use in solving the challenge, as well as access to firm members working in the industry.

The CAIA HCKC Charette committee is working to develop sponsorships and grants to assist in paying for the opportunity. Each team will be given an expense budget to be self-managed.

If interested in participating, contact David Nienhueser, CAIA HCKC event planner, VOA Associates Incorporated, no later than May 1 at 312-453-7523 or dnienhueser@voa.com. For more information, visit www.aplacetoflourish.net.
