Clinton Hospital’s New Emergency Department Opens
CLINTON, Mass. — UMass Memorial Health Care recently opened the doors to the new emergency department at Clinton Hospital.
Designed by The S/L/A/M Collaborative, the addition, more than twice the size of the original department, addresses projected growth, new technologies and establishes an environment that can fully support patient care goals. Located within a residential setting, the design introduces a modern exterior palette that is complementary of the existing surroundings. The new ED entrance is distinguished by a glazed canopy and the façade features an aesthetically playful pattern of transparent and opaque materials.
“The design supports the hospital’s philosophy of patient-centered care and their goal of remaining a leader in receiving outstanding patient satisfaction scores,” says David Neal, AIA, ACHA, The S/L/A/M Collaborative.
All treatment rooms in the 14,000-square-foot department are private and sized to allow family members to remain with their loved ones. Acute care exam rooms are carefully organized around an open team station to accommodate visualization of patients and communication for staff. Direct access is established to the secured holding and observation areas creating an ED that is efficient and easy to manage. Elements such as warm wood tones and nature-inspired imagery give patients, family and staff a feeling of comfort, enhancing the overall patient experience.
Turner Construction Company oversaw the construction of the project.
