ATLANTA, Ga. — Doctors and other medical personnel recently moved into a fully renovated hospital at Langley Air Force Base in Langley, Virginia. Heery International’s team of integrated architects, engineers, interior designers and construction managers successfully wrapped up the $62-million project in July.
Heery’s work on this project has also been recognized by the Design-Build Institute of America – Southeast Region with a Design-Build Award for projects over $15 million.
The 160,000-square-foot renovation reconfigured and modernized the USAF 1st Medical Group facilities to support the latest technologies and equipment. The majority of the renovations occurred in the main hospital building, but also included two other ancillary buildings on the base. In addition, the project included the design and construction of a 3,492-square-foot veterinary clinic to serve the military working dogs, as well as the pets of base personnel.
Key elements of the project included modernizing the life safety and mechanical systems throughout the buildings while replacing and upgrading exterior items including brick façades, windows and roofing.
All the work was completed through a detailed phasing plan that allowed all departments to remain fully operational throughout construction, without the use of modular or temporary buildings. Building systems from security to HVAC and IT, as well as patient and staff access, were maintained throughout the project.
Heery has renovated a number of Air Force medical clinics in the last few years, most recently winning contracts for work at Seymour Johnson AFB, Robins AFB and Peterson AFB. The Heery team employs Evidence-Based Design to meet the primary objectives of these projects, with a focus on improving the clinic environment, reducing patient stress levels and improving patient outcomes.
