New ER Receives the American Institute of Architects (AIA) Merit Award for Design Excellence and Business First’s Brick by Brick Award for Best Medical Complex

Catholic Health’s Emergency Center at Mercy Hospital of Buffalo, a new 46,000 square-foot hospital addition housing the largest and most advanced treatment center in the region, recently received accolades for its construction and design.

The $32 million construction project was chosen for a Merit Award for Design Excellence by the American Institute of Architects (AIA), Buffalo and Western New York Chapter, during the group’s Design Awards Gala held on November 18 at the Mansion on Delaware.

In addition, the Emergency Center received Buffalo Business First’s Brick by Brick Award for Best Medical Complex in 2010.

On hand to accept the AIA Award were C. J. Urlaub, President and CEO of Mercy Hospital, and Harry Warren, Design Principal of the Cannon Design Project Team.

Other Cannon Design Project Team members present for the award were: John Hall, Project Principal; Ed Muck, Project Manager; Ike Lowry, Project Designer; and Ken Killian, Construction Administration. Joy Kuebler of Joy Kuebler Landscape Architects, PC, was also recognized for her role in the project.

In addition to Catholic Health, the Business First Brick by Brick Award recognized the entire construction team who worked on the Mercy Emergency Center facility, including: the general contractor, The Pike Company, and architectural firm, Cannon Design.
