HOUSTON, Texas– KBR announced that its Building Group has topped out the new Duke Medicine Cancer Center facility project in Durham, N.C. KBR started work on the center in 2009.

The 267,000 square foot, seven-floor facility will house major cancer programs, including Radiology and Diagnostic Treatment, 105 multi-disciplinary exam rooms, 75 infusion stations, 25 clinic rooms and three linear accelerators. Other notable features include an outdoor infusion terrace, first floor café and a patient resource center.

Construction began in the spring of 2009 and completion is expected in early 2012. The site for the new Duke Cancer Center facility is adjacent to the Duke Clinic Reception Building and existing Morris Cancer Center. The Duke Cancer Center facility project is proceeding slightly ahead of the Duke Medicine Pavilion, a major hospital addition also being constructed by KBR’s Building Group.

Work on the 660,000 square foot Duke Medicine Pavilion began in February of 2010 and is scheduled for completion in 2013. It consists of an eight-floor hospital addition with 18 new operating rooms, 96 critical care beds, 64 intermediate beds, and a new imaging platform. Also included in this project is an expanded patient resource center with a health library, an inter-operative surgical imaging area, a multi-level concourse and a new café. Both projects are designed to achieve LEED Silver certification and include green roof space and rooftop terraces, use of sustainable building materials and energy efficient mechanical systems.

KBR’s Building Group is also constructing several enabling projects which support the overall program including a South Concourse addition, a Quadrangle addition, demolition of a research building, and an open space package consisting of site utilities, storm water upgrades and a major landscaping.

The two projects are part of a nearly $1 billion capital commitment by Duke Medicine to focus on improving patient centered care.

“We are pleased to continue our relationship with the Building Group as we expand the ability of Duke Medicine to provide the finest in healthcare to our patients,” said Shawn Subasic, Director, Facility Planning, Design & Construction, Duke Medicine.

“We are delighted to have been chosen to work with the Duke Medicine on these compelling and extraordinary projects. Healthcare is a huge part of what the Building Group is focused on and these are two of the most sophisticated projects with which we have been involved,” said Luther Cochrane, Chairman of the Building Group. “We have enjoyed a great relationship with Duke and their consultants and look forward to the successful completion of these two landmark projects.”
