BIRMINGHAM, Ala. — General Contractor Brasfield & Gorrie and Architect-of-Record Gresham, Smith and Partners have been recognized in the 2010 Design Build Institute of America (DBIA) national awards program.  The firms were honored for the design-build project management of University of Alabama at Birmingham (UAB) Hospital’s new 630,000-square-foot, nine-story Women & Infants Center/Hazelrig-Salter Radiation Oncology Center in downtown Birmingham, Alabama.

The new Women & Infants Center combines the most advanced technology with a comfortable patient- and family-focused hotel-like setting.  The Center offers general and high risk gynecology and obstetric services, as well as unparalleled services for gynecologic cancers, infertility and urogynecologic problems. The new state-of-the-art facility is home to Alabama’s most comprehensive Regional Neonatal Intensive Care Unit (RNICU) and together with the Continuing Care Nursery (CCN), houses the largest single-room special care nursery in the United States.  The new Women & Infants Center connects on three levels to UAB’s North Pavilion and will also connect on three levels to The Children’s Hospital of Alabama’s new facility, which is scheduled to open in late 2012.

“We are pleased our collective teamwork has been recognized with this award,” commented Senior Project Manager Jud Jacobs.  “Designing and constructing a healthcare facility in the middle of downtown Birmingham between two of the largest hospitals in the State, with a three-story pedestrian bridge located over the State’s busiest emergency room was most definitely a challenge.  Constant communication, teamwork and an intense focus on quality control ultimately led to a successful project.”

“We are proud our efforts have been honored on a national level by DBIA,” commented Robert Murphy, AIA, LEED AP, Healthcare Principal, Gresham, Smith and Partners.  “In order to keep the project on schedule, construction commenced six months before completed design documents were handed over to the contractor.  Construction of the building shell and core was ahead of the interior fit-out which took an extreme amount of coordination between the clinical user groups, our design team, the contractor and the subcontractors to ensure that all ran smoothly.  Our efforts resulted in a state-of-the-art, cost-efficient facility which ultimately improves the quality of life for those within this community.”

In addition to serving as Architect-of-Record, GS&P provided Landscape Architecture services.  LBYD, Inc. served as the project’s Structural Engineer, I.C. Thomasson Associates provided Mechanical, Electrical and Plumbing Engineering services, Walter Schoel Engineering provided Civil Engineering support and Kahn Associates provided Interior Design services.  EDI, Ltd provided Medical Systems design services, Williamson & Associates served as the Waterproofing Consultant, Hardy Corporation was the Design-Build Mechanical Contractor and Griffin Electric provided Design-Build Electrical Contracting services.  Perkins+Will and AE Design served as the project’s Executive Architect and CRS Engineering served as the Executive Engineer.

DBIA strives to be the industry’s preeminent resource for leadership, education, objective expertise and best practices for the successful integrated delivery of capital projects. The organization promotes the value of design-build project delivery and teaches the effective integration of design and construction services to ensure success for owners and design and construction practitioners. Each year, DBIA invites those doing design-build work to submit their successful projects for the National Design-Build Award Competition.
