The National Fire Protection Association has released the 2014 edition of NFPA 70: National Electrical Code. While the NEC sets standards for safe electrical installation, NFPA 99: Health Care Facilities Code covers the performance requirements for electrical distribution systems in healthcare facilities.
The 2014 NEC clarifies the responsibilities of each of the two documents, and in several instances the NEC directs users to extracted information from NFPA 99.
The new edition of the NEC also coordinates requirements with the Facility Guidelines Institute’s Guidelines for Design and Construction of Health Care Facilities on issues such as the required number of electrical receptacles in operating rooms and items to be included on each branch of an essential electrical system.
