Inaugural Certified Healthcare Constructor (CHC) exam to be offered in March 17, 2010

Chicago, Ill — The Certified Healthcare Constructor (CHC) is a new credential which will be conferred on professionals working in healthcare construction who meet the eligibility criteria and successfully pass the examination.  The exam will be offered for the first time on March 17, 2010 in San Diego, CA  in conjunction with the International Summit & Exhibition on Health Facility Planning, Design, and Construction (PDC) hosted by the American Society for Healthcare Engineering (ASHE) of the American Hospital Association and the American Institute of Architects.

“The CHC represents the collective wisdom and shared vision of ASHE leaders and experts who have worked in healthcare construction for decades.  This new credential demonstrates that there is a defined body of knowledge that is representative of professional practice”, said Dale Woodin, Executive Director of ASHE.  “ASHE represents the professions responsible for the safe design and construction of healthcare facilities in the United States.  Their work is our mission and so we are delighted to promote this credential as a way to recognize these individuals for their contributions in healthcare”.

Candidates for the CHC will typically have job responsibilities in healthcare construction and their responsibilities may include but are not limited to construction manager, architect/engineer designer, project superintendent or manager, planner, marketer, estimator or owner’s representative.  The exam is divided into four areas, or content domains, that require knowledge and experience: healthcare industry fundamentals; planning, design, and construction processes; healthcare facility safety; and financial stewardship.  The goal of the new certification is to recognize and differentiate from others those individuals who demonstrate knowledge and experience in healthcare construction first by passing the exam and ongoing through completing requisite activities to maintain their certification.
“We are delighted to launch a new credential to those already offered by the AHA-CC”, said Elaine Mrzlak, Manager of the AHA-CC.  “The credential represents years of developing knowledge and practices in healthcare design and construction.  It is an important milestone for the profession and the communities and patients they serve”.

A computer-based version of the exam will be available through Applied Management Professionals, Inc (AMP) at participating H&R Block locations in early summer.

More information about candidate eligibility, the application process, and the examination is available at http://www.aha.org/aha/Certification-Center/index.htmlor by calling 312-422-3711.

ASHE is a personal membership group of the AHA.  Nearly 10,000 members count ASHE as a key source of professional development, advocacy, and representation of issues key that affect their work in physical healthcare environment.  For more information about ASHE contact 312-422-3822 or go to www.ashe.org
