WASHINGTON, D.C. — The Eisenhower Memorial Commission (EMC) has announced the selection of Gilbane Building Company to oversee the design and construction management of the Dwight D. Eisenhower National Memorial, the nation’s first presidential memorial of the 21st century. Gilbane Building Company will support the U.S. General Services Administration (GSA) and the EMC in all aspects of design team and contractor integration, quality
control, value engineering, scheduling and budget management.
Gilbane Building Company is a division of Gilbane, Inc., an award-winning construction company founded in 1873 and headquartered in Rhode Island with local offices in Laurel, Maryland. Their extensive portfolio includes high-profile public projects, such as the World War II Memorial, the Vietnam Veterans Memorial and the U.S. Capitol Visitors Center.
“We are excited to engage Gilbane Building Company to manage the design and construction of the memorial,” said EMC Executive Architect Daniel J. Feil, FAIA. “Gilbane Building Company’s demonstrated expertise, local knowledge and level of experience with public projects promises an excellent collaborative effort with the design team.”
This fully competitive procurement was overseen by the U.S. General Services Administration (GSA)/National Capitol Region (NCR). Gilbane Building Company is scheduled to begin their responsibilities to manage the memorial design by Frank Gehry on January 11, 2010.
About the Memorial:
The memorial will be built on a four-acre site at the base of Capitol Hill, across from the National Air & Space Museum. Although the memorial has yet to be designed, it will be a landscaped civic plaza that respects vistas to and from the U. S. Capitol and the historic Maryland Avenue view corridor.
