Vertical construction has started on the $900-million expansion of Geisinger Wyoming Valley Medical Center, which is set to transform care delivery for northeastern Pennsylvania. The project team includes FCA and Turner Construction.

The project scope features a building a new patient tower, along with increasing the medical center’s capacity for emergency medicine, critical care, trauma care, surgical services and advanced cardiovascular programs. The project will put Geisinger Wyoming Valley’s capabilities on par with large academic medical centers in Philadelphia, New York and other major metropolitan areas.

Steel is now rising on the 11-story, 600,000-square-foot patient tower. When complete, the structure will reportedly contain more steel than the Eiffel Tower. The tower will increase capacity from 356 to 500 beds, expand operating rooms from 12 to 18, enlarge the emergency department and support Geisinger’s goal of providing all private patient rooms. The facility is expected to open in the first quarter of 2028.

According to officials at Turner Construction, the project is expected to support up to 3,800 construction jobs and generate approximately $1 billion in local economic impact, with the onsite workforce growing from 150 to as many as 450 workers at peak activity. Upon completion, Geisinger plans to hire 400 additional employees.
