Hundreds of south Orange County, California residents and UCI Health co-workers came together on a wet, rainy Saturday to celebrate the upcoming opening of UCI Health — Irvine, the academic health system’s sixth hospital. When it opens in December, the 144-bed facility will be the nation’s first all-electric acute care hospital. The project team includes CO Architects and Hensel Phelps.

Its opening will complete the medical complex on Jamboree Road. Last year, the Joe C. Wen & Family Advanced Care Center and the Chao Family Comprehensive Cancer Center and Ambulatory Care building began serving patients.

Tours of the new hospital showcased how patient safety, quality care and sustainability are woven into the hospital’s design. Those who toured the seven-story hospital were able to experience:

    • Patient rooms that are 250 square feet on average — larger than standard hospital rooms — to allow families and loved ones to remain more comfortable when visiting.
    • 75-inch smart televisions in each room where patients will be able to order food, interact with their care team, get discharge instructions, condition and treatment information and stream entertainment.
    • Natural light, artwork emphasizing soothing natural landscapes, outdoor terraces and gardens full of native plants.
    • One of the nation’s first all-electric kitchens to serve a hospital.
    • Sustainable furnishings and furniture free of harmful chemicals, vapors and materials.
