Seventy years after North Shore University (Manhasset, New York) first opened its doors, Petrocelli Surgical Pavilion has opened. The $560-million, 288,000-square-foot tower features 18 operating rooms, including three hybrid rooms with advanced imaging, along with 132 intensive care rooms.
The project’s designers wanted to seamlessly blend the materiality and scale of the existing NSUH complex, as well as create an open and inviting facility for patients, staff and visitors. This experience begins at the sheltered entry court that leads to a double-height lobby that brings natural light into the space.
To build the pavilion, innovative and emerging technologies were employed throughout the construction process. This included utilizing drones equipped with high-resolution cameras and sensors to provide real-time insights into construction progress and site conditions. The firm used 3D modeling and weekly 360 degree image and video capture to better assess progress.
The project team included Skanska USA and CannonDesign.
