Two healthcare projects are among winners of the Precast/Prestressed Concrete Institute’s 2024 PCI Design Awards. For 61 years, the awards have showcased and recognized creative and innovative uses of precast concrete. Panels of engineers, architects and precast concrete producers judge all submittals.

“This year again proved how exceptional precast concrete projects are, what the precast concrete industry has achieved, and how it will continue to advance and enhance the built environment,” said PCI President and CEO Bob Risser, P.E. “The judges this year were incredibly impressed by the quality of each submission and the amount of care that went into creating a story for each project. Judges had a difficult time determining the winners. Congratulations to all the project teams that showcase what our members are capable of producing.”

    This year’s healthcare (co-winners) are:

UI Health Specialty Care Building, Chicago, Illinois

Precast concrete producer: International Concrete Products

Precast concrete specialty engineer: McCluskey Engineering Corp.

    Architect(s): Shive Hattery, ZGF

    General contractor: Pepper Construction

Depth and texture of each precast concrete panel for this healthcare facility were tested for shade, shadow and scale. The design team selected a custom sawtooth texture that fluctuates in appearance both throughout the day and throughout the seasons. The surgery center’s vertical precast concrete panels reflect the neo-Gothic architecture of the existing campus, complementing the structures around it.

    Emory Musculoskeletal Institute, Atlanta, Georgia

Precast concrete producer: GATE Precast Company

Precast concrete specialty engineer: InfraStructure LLC

    Architect: HKS

    General contractor: Brasfield & Gorrie

The design features several curved precast concrete panels, some spanning more than 11 feet in width. These curved panels provide a fluidity to the facility that mimics human anatomy.
