A 14,000-square-foot renovation of the Neurosciences Critical Care Unit at Lahey Hospital and Medical Center in Burlington, Massachusetts is complete. Historically, the location of the NCCU was a medical-surgical inpatient unit and there was no physical NCCU at Lahey.
The project, which resulted in a new 18-bed NCCU (including nine neuro-intensive care unit beds and nine neuro-progressive care unit beds for critical care), was undertaken and completed in an occupied and active area of the hospital. Minimizing impact to patient care was essential and the renovation was sequenced into three phases.
Among the most prominent concerns were those related to the modification of mechanical, electrical and plumbing systems, with these lines either serving active spaces or running directly through them. The support spaces were also modernized and reconfigured to maximize staff collaboration and operational flexibility for the multidisciplinary healthcare team treating critically ill patients.
The project team included Margulies Perruzzi and Columbia.
