Hoag Hospital Breaks Ground on Green Renovations at New Irvine Facility
Hoag Hospital Irvine is slated to open in 2010
Newport Beach, Calif. — August 26 — Hoag Memorial Hospital Presbyterian kicked-off extensive renovations to bring state-of-the-art health care offerings to its newly acquired Irvine facility today. In addition to updating the hospital’s technology, infrastructure and design to meet Hoag standards, the renovations also incorporate green building elements and construction practices.
Hoag will use sustainable practices to guide renovation options. Going beyond cost and durability reviews, Hoag will consider energy use, air quality and recycling when choosing options for demolition, materials selection and construction.
“Sustainability and healing go hand-in-hand, so we’re modernizing health care delivery for Irvine by aligning the hospital with the needs of the community today and creating a platform for the future,” said Robert Braithwaite, chief administrative officer for Hoag Hospital Irvine.
Estimated to cost about $84 million, renovations include the addition of state-of-the-art operating rooms, nursing floors and imaging equipment, reconstructing pre- and post-surgery and recovery areas and preparing space for new and innovative technology. Hoag Hospital Irvine will open as an acute care general hospital offering a wide variety of inpatient and outpatient services, as well as a fully staffed emergency room in 2010.
The 244,000-square-foot hospital is using a familiar Orange County theme for interior design, the “Mountains to Sea Trail.” The 22-mile trail traverses the 93,000-acre Irvine Ranch from Weir Canyon to Upper Newport Bay. This trail inspired design elements such as the color palette of sage and taupe and photographs taken along the trail will be incorporated throughout the hospital.
“Using the ‘Mountains to the Sea Trail’ is a natural connection,” said Sandford Smith, senior vice president of real estate and facilities for Hoag Hospital. “The new hospital represents an opportunity to link Hoag’s Newport Beach facility and the sea to Irvine and South County communities. It represents connectivity.”
Earlier this year, Hoag assumed a long-term lease for the hospital facility formerly known as Irvine Regional Hospital and Medical Center. The facility serves as an extension of Hoag’s services in Newport Beach and its seven Hoag Health Centers located throughout Orange County.
The hospital and emergency room will remain closed as renovations are made. In the interim, emergency services are available at a number of local hospitals including Hoag Hospital in Newport Beach, Saddleback, St. Joseph’s, Western Medical Center and Kaiser Permanente Hospital Irvine. Physician offices adjacent to the hospital will remain open during construction.
