A new inpatient tower at St. Joseph’s Hospital in Tampa, Florida has received top honors in Precast/Prestressed Concrete Institute’s annual award program.
The inpatient tower has received the Best Healthcare and Medical Building in the 2022 PCI Design Awards, which recognizes the best precast concrete construction projects in the U.S. Each year, a jury of architects, designers and construction professionals determine which projects demonstrate the best precast concrete attributes.
The tower features a 3D, prefabricated precast concrete skin that “pushes the boundaries between design and manufacturing,” says Noble Levesque, senior project manager for Gate Precast. The defining element of the architecture is the 25-foot-tall precast concrete structural V-shaped columns at the first floor. The design team used precast glass-fiber-reinforced concrete to ensure the columns had the same quality architectural finish as the precast concrete panels above.
The project team included Gate Precast Company, J & M Structural Engineers, HOK, Walter P Moore, Robins & Morton and W.W. Gay Mechanical Contractors, Inc.
