Fredericksburg VA Outpatient Clinic to Elevate Quality of Life, Productivity of Veterans

Carnegie Management & Development Corporation has partnered with architecture and design firm Little to build a new, 426,722-square-foot Veterans Affairs Outpatient Clinic in Fredericksburg, Virginia. When complete, it will be one of largest privately owned VA medical facilities in the country. Harvey-Cleary is serving as general contractor on the project.

The facility will be located on a 48-acre site, with plans to include a healing garden and veterans memorial and a focus on elevating the quality of life and productivity of veterans, while also protecting the health, safety and welfare of veterans, visitors and staff.

Helping to facilitate and guide the arrival experience, the exterior design incorporates a central fountain, instilling a sense of calmness, while main entry points serve as beacons, featuring an abundance of glass to highlight transparency and light and projecting canopies that offer unity between the exterior and interior.

With an emphasis placed on the use of a warm, inviting material palette, upon entry visitors experience a two-story lobby that acts as a natural wayfinding element guiding patients, family members and staff to smaller “streetscapes” that lead to individual clinics. Simple wayfinding, the incorporation of natural elements such as wood and soft earth tones, and rhythmic floor patterning, help reduce scale without comprising grandness—all while providing an experience focused on health and healing.

Construction of the clinic is expected to be complete in late 2023.
