The AORN Foundation, in partnership with the Sextant Foundation, will be offering a two-day hands-on workshop experience — “Reimagining the OR” — as a pre-conference program at AORN Global Surgical Conference & Expo 2020, located in Anaheim, California. The workshop will be held March 26-27.

The program, supported by the Facility Guidelines Institute and Catalysis, uses elements of human-centered design (empathy, define, ideate, prototype, test) and process improvement techniques to reimagine OR spaces, including pre-, intra- and post-operative environments.

At the workshop, participants will gather to model a new operating room that improves patient outcomes and clinical operations. At the close of the workshop, participants will have an opportunity to propose potential changes to The Facility Guidelines standards and best practices that govern hospital and outpatient facility design. Architects earn 14 AIA HSW learning units.

Why focus on operating rooms? According to the American College of Surgeons (Massachusetts Chapter), Americans experience an average of six operating room procedures in a lifetime. Any invasive procedure brings a significant amount of risk and expense to both the patient and healthcare organization. If the effectiveness of these physical spaces can be improved, this will help improve outcomes and overall public health.
