IIDA recently announced the Best of Competition winner for the 2019 IIDA Healthcare Design Awards as Stantec’s Washington, D.C. office for the New York Proton Center. The firm was chosen from nine winners across six categories.
In addition to being named Best of Competition, the New York Proton Center was also the Ambulatory, Specialty Clinic category winner. The 135,000-square-foot facility was built by Gilbane.
“Healthcare design is all about overcoming unique challenges, and Stantec took on the challenge of building New York’s first proton center with great consideration,” said IIDA Executive Vice President and CEO Cheryl S. Durst, Hon. FIIDA. “The design team created a beautiful, welcoming and efficient space that uses data and technology to maximize patient comfort.”
Projects were reviewed by a panel of healthcare design professionals, including Alexandra Bonner, IIDA, project interior designer, FCA; Eric Koffler, IIDA, AIA, senior associate, NBBJ and Tiana Lemons, IIDA, senior associate, healthcare studio leader, Orcutt | Winslow.
“This bright and airy project is an excellent example of thoughtful space planning and biophilic design,” said Bonner on behalf of the jury. “The material and finish palette is a fresh nod to incorporating natural elements in an otherwise urban context, creating an exceptional project deserving of this recognition.”
