The Children’s Hospital at Erlanger – Kennedy Outpatient Center in Chattanooga, Tennessee has been named this year’s winner of the international “Generative Space Award,” conferred by The CARITAS Project. The recognition is bestowed annually to a project that has cultivated A Place to Flourish, as evidenced by a conscious and continuous improvement of physical environment and organizational culture.

The project team, including general contractor McCarthy Building Companies and architect HKS Architects, Inc., designed a building that has changed the patient/family experience, with its “onstage/offstage” clinic modules, kiosk registration, no private offices and incredible discovery/waiting rooms. It is also a celebration of the community with the fire truck and tow truck greeting young patients and their families on each floor.

A panel of judges comprised of healthcare experts and architects from around the world assess each entry on the overall project, evidence of continuous improvement (or generative space) and the intimate relationship the project cultivates within five user groups: the patient, the family, the visitor, the staff and the community.

The call for entries for the 11th annual Generative Space Award seeks recent projects that demonstrate the integration of the physical and social environments to make a community A Place to Flourish. All settings that satisfy the entry requirements are eligible for this award. The deadline for submission is June 15, 2020.
