The VA Maryland Health Care System has selected Matthew Orenstein as the new chief of Facilities & Engineering Service. In this position, Orenstein oversees strategic capital investment, design and construction of buildings and infrastructure, the maintenance and operations of energy and utility systems and patient and employee transportation for the VA Maryland Health Care System, which includes the Baltimore, Loch Raven and Perry Point VA Medical Centers and five VA outpatient clinics. He also provides engineering review and guidance to the maintenance of structures, utility systems, biomedical and non-biomedical equipment, heating and air conditioning plants and campus grounds, ensuring that all systems comply with published guidelines and good engineering practice.

Prior to joining the VA Maryland Health Care System, Orenstein served as chief of engineer for the West Texas VA Health Care System and as the acquisitions program manager for the VA North Texas Health Care System. Before joining the VA, he worked as an engineer for two years in the private sector. Orenstein served in the U.S. Army for 22 years, retiring as a Lieutenant Colonel. His military service included two combat tours in Iraq.

“What has impressed me most since joining the VA Maryland Health Care System is an inescapable culture of passion to serve veterans in a welcoming, team-based environment,” said Orenstein. “From executive leadership through the frontline, staff here quickly come together to help each other, focused on delivering patient-centered solutions under high-pressure situations. This is definitely an environment where I feel right at home.”

Orenstein, who earned a Bachelor of Science in Civil Engineering from Syracuse University, a master’s in industrial engineering and a master’s in business administration from Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute, is nearing completion of a master’s in public administration from the University of Texas of the Permian Basin. He holds licenses as a Registered Professional Engineer and a Certified Facility Manager.
