CHICAGO, Ill. – The American Society for Training & Development presented Ann & Robert H. Lurie Children’s Hospital of Chicago with the 2012 Excellence in Practice Award for the Moment One Readiness Orientation practice the hospital used during its move on June 9, 2012.

The hospital moved 127 critically ill patients from its Lincoln Park location three miles away to a new facility in downtown Chicago. To prepare the 5,000 plus employees and volunteers, the  hospital’s Clinical & Organizational Development Department helped prepare and train staff for the once in a lifetime move.  The Moment One Readiness Orientation strategy has been sought out by hospitals nationally and recommended by consultants working with executives of hospitals contemplating such moves.

“Because of MORO, we were able to safely care for patients and families at the very first moment we opened the new hospital doors for service,” said Diana Halfer, MSN, RN, NEA-BC administrator of clinical & organizational development.

The Excellence in Practice Awards program recognizes organizations for results achieved through training and development practices and solutions. Awards are presented to organizations with proven practices that have delivered measurable results in achieving organizational goals. Citations are presented to organizations with practices that have shown they will demonstrate measurable results.

ASTD received 150 submissions in 2012 from organizations around the world. Nine practices have been chosen to receive awards and 30 have been selected to receive citations.  Excellence in Practice categories include: career development, diversity and inclusion, managing the learning function, integrated talent management, facilitating organizational change, performance improvement, coaching and mentoring, learning technologies, organizational learning and development and sales enablement.

Award and citation recipients were honored recently at an awards ceremony held during ASTD’s International Conference & Exposition in Dallas, Texas. Visit www.astd.org for more information about the conference and award programs.
