Whitson has more than 20 years of experience as a practicing architect, specializing in health and science environments. He has worked on projects ranging from replacement hospitals to research labs. Whitson comes to HOK from the New York-based architecture and engineering firm Skidmore, Owings & Merrill LLP, where he most recently served as health and science practice leader.
“Paul’s level of design expertise defines a balance between the technical and expressive elements of health and science projects,” said Rebecca Nolan, management principal for HOK’s St. Louis office. “His design philosophy focuses on the integration of the therapeutic process, patient comfort and provider effectiveness, which brings real value to our clients.”
Whitson previously served as project director for the three million-square-foot Sheikh Khalifa Medical City in Abu Dhabi and the 300,000-square-foot Katz Women’s Hospital and the 440,000-square-foot Mount Sinai Center for Science and Medicine, both in New York.
Whitson earned his bachelor’s degree from Texas A&M University and a Master of Architecture from Washington University in St. Louis. He started his architectural career at HOK in 1987 as an intern.
