Goldsbury Foundation Donates $20M to San Antonio Hospital

SAN ANTONIO, Texas — The Children’s Hospital of San Antonio Foundation announced a $20-million grant from Goldsbury Foundation. It is the single largest gift to CHRISTUS Santa Rosa in its 144-year history and is intended to help create an environment of healing and hope for children and their families, as well as support innovative, collaborative initiatives focused on health, wellness and community outreach at the Children’s Hospital of San Antonio, the first and only free-standing children’s hospital in San Antonio.

The gift comes one year after CHRISTUS Santa Rosa announced it would build a world class children’s hospital in the heart of downtown San Antonio and just two months after news of a gift of $3 million from The USAA Foundation.

Goldsbury Foundation has a long history with CHRISTUS Santa Rosa. Previous grants helped open the David Christopher Goldsbury Center for Children and Families, a multi-specialty outpatient clinic that has touched the lives of more than 250,000 children, as well as the Center for Miracles, a nationally renowned child abuse assessment program that has treated more than 7,500 children from 30 South Texas counties. The foundation and the hospital also collaborated to provide medical, surgical and rehabilitative care to handicapped children in Northern Mexico.

“This gift is given with grateful appreciation for the wonderful care that CHRISTUS Santa Rosa provides to the children of San Antonio, South Texas and beyond,” said Suzanne Mead Feldmann, executive director, Goldsbury Foundation.

“We have long supported not-for-profit, mission-driven healthcare and we support their mission of being ‘the best place for the sickest children’ and ‘the only place for every child’. We are excited about the future of the Children’s Hospital of San Antonio and believe that the collaborative partnership between the Children’s Hospital, their new academic partners Baylor College of Medicine and Texas Children’s Hospital, represents an exciting new chapter for pediatric healthcare in our community,” said Feldmann.

The gift will be used for several significant areas. First, it will be directed to enhance and upgrade the current construction to include a breathtaking two-story lobby and entryway for the new Children’s Hospital of San Antonio. Goldsbury Foundation’s gift will also be used to enhance the aesthetics of the campus. Specifically, monies will be used for family centered amenities, including lush gardens and children’s play areas. Finally, a portion of the gift will be earmarked for the development and implementation of innovative, collaborative initiatives focused on health and wellness, and community outreach.

Located at their downtown campus since 1959, the Children’s Hospital of San Antonio is currently undergoing a complete transformation of its physical plant to include state-of-the-art critical care facilities, research space and family centered amenities. CHRISTUS Health is making a substantial financial commitment to the project. Beyond the $250 million in plant and facilities, CHRISTUS is investing $135 million for demolition and new construction.
