PLANO, Texas — The 427-bed acute-care The Medical Center of Plano will soon break ground on a $66-million expansion and renovation of its existing facilities. The new infrastructure will enable the hospital to keep pace with the steady growth and development of its Level II Trauma Center and with its continuing emergence as a tertiary referral center for a wide area of north Texas and southern Oklahoma.
Architectural services are being provided by Perkins+Will’s Dallas, Texas office. Construction is expected to begin in May 2013, with completion slated for late 2014.
The project includes:
- Construction of two additional floors totaling more than 56,000 square feet at the north end of the main hospital, directly above the emergency department;
- The addition of 68 beds dedicated to critical and progressive-care patients in the hospital’s neurosciences unit;
- Renovation of existing public areas, including the south lobby and the hospital’s cafeteria;
- Relocation of the patient registration area to the facility’s south entrance;
- Updates to the hospital’s exterior, including construction of new covered entranceways at all points of public access;
- Relocation and renovation to administrative offices; and
- New patient diagnostic technology with the addition of a 3T MRI and new EP Cath Lab.
The Medical Center of Plano’s Level II Trauma Center was Collin County’s first, and only the third in the Dallas/Fort Worth area, at the time of its designation. The hospital’s neurosciences unit, including its Certified Primary Stroke Center, has become a standard referral center for patients from the I-635/LBJ corridor of north Dallas all the way to southern Oklahoma and southwest Arkansas, with a range of services that extends from technologically advanced stroke care to delicate and highly precise surgery for brain tumors and other complex conditions.
“Increasingly, we’re caring for people who’ve traveled a considerable distance from home,” said Troy A. Villarreal, FACHE, the hospital’s chief executive officer. “With this renovation, we’ll be able to offer these patients and other guests a physical environment that reflects the sophistication of the services we deliver, as well as provide more beds to accommodate our growing patient population.”
Expansion of TMCP’s cafeteria will provide additional seating with areas for families to relax and enjoy refreshments throughout the day. Plans call for both interior and patio dining. Relocation of the patient registration area to the south entrance will create a new primary orientation for the hospital, and clear space at the north entrance for improvements to the existing retail space and future services.
“Overall, we’ll be bringing a modern look to the hospital, and enhancing the level of comfort and convenience for our guests,” added Villarreal.
The Medical Center of Plano is part of HCA North Texas, one of the region’s largest, most comprehensive healthcare providers with 10 hospitals, one Children’s Hospital, one psychiatric hospital, 12 ambulatory surgery centers, 13 imaging centers and two freestanding emergency rooms in Dallas/Fort Worth and the surrounding areas. In addition to the $66-million expansion/renovation project, HCA North Texas is in the midst of another multi-million dollar expansion project in north Texas. Located in north Fort Worth, a new $71-million, 142,000-square-foot full-service hospital will break ground during the summer of 2013 with a projected opening date of December 2014. It will offer emergency services, surgical services, imaging, endoscopy, women’s services, a medical/surgical unit and an intensive care unit.
