Childrens Hospital of RichmondMeeting the unique healthcare needs of children and providing Richmond the most advanced and coordinated care possible is the goal of the new 245,000-square-foot pavilion at the Children’s Hospital of Richmond at Virginia Commonwealth University, located on the Medical College of Virginia campus.

Designed by HKS Architects, Inc., the multi-story, high-tech ambulatory pavilion for pediatric services is scheduled to be complete in 2015. It is slated to be the largest, most advanced outpatient facility dedicated to children in the region.

The new pavilion will include diagnostic and treatment services for children, bringing together to one location the majority of outpatient pediatric services. Medical student education and clinical research studies also will be included at the facility. It contains four levels of pediatric care clinics, including six specialty clinic pods, each with 12 exam rooms, a treatment room, support spaces and nurse work core.

Also featured in the new pavilion are pediatric-dedicated imaging, surgical and endoscopy procedure rooms, hematology/oncology and pediatric faculty offices. A 330,400-square-foot, seven-level parking deck for 600 cars is located underneath the building.

“Designed with future expansion in mind, the building can accommodate additional clinic pods and operating rooms, as demand for these services increases,” said Greg Luongo, vice president and designer with HKS. “Future expansion will include a seven-story, 280,000-square-foot vertical addition of six clinic floors.”

The project is seeking LEED Silver certification from the U.S. Green Building Council.
