Construction Milestones Celebrated as Highlands Ranch Hospital, Memorial Hospital North Top Out

EYP team members donned hard hats for the recent topping out of UCHealth Highlands Ranch Hospital and UCHealth Memorial Hospital North in Colorado Springs, Colorado. In each community they joined UCHealth staff, local leaders and the construction team to celebrate major milestones on the hospital projects.

“At Highlands Ranch, the hospital design is based on a prototype that EYP developed for UCHealth’s Longs Peak hospital, an efficient, flexible model with a memorable identity that reflects the Colorado context,” said Tushar Gupta, AIA, EYP’s lead designer. “In Colorado Springs, the design of the addition draws on the distinctive architecture of the existing hospital in material, fenestration reinforcing a sense of place, a connection to the campus and the UCHealth brand.”

When it opens in early 2019, UCHealth Highlands Ranch Hospital will bring innovative, leading-edge care and advanced medicine to residents in one of the fastest-growing areas of the country. Spanning approximately 360,000 square feet – with an adjacent 85,000-square-foot medical office building housing a two-story cancer center – the full-service hospital will open with approximately 72 inpatient beds with room to expand.

The hospital will feature a birth center including C-section operating rooms and Level III NICU, intensive care unit, operating rooms, Level III trauma center and emergency department, advanced cardiac services and complete imaging. UCHealth will partner with both community physicians and with the CU School of Medicine to provide care at UCHealth Highlands Ranch Hospital.

The $310-million, six-story hospital will have room to expand in the future as the needs of the growing community change. In addition to EYP, the design team includes BSA LifeStructures, Datum Engineers, Gallun Snow, Affiliated Engineers Inc., Kimley Horn, The Lund Partnership and BHA Design Incorporated, RK Mechanical and Encore Electric. Mortenson Construction is the builder.

At UCHealth Memorial Hospital North, the $93-million project will add 130,000 square feet of space to the north campus. The expansion adds eight additional rooms – including two trauma suites – to the ED, along with an additional CT scanner, increases operating rooms from six to eight, with room to add another two and expands pharmacy services to include 24/7 outpatient pharmacy services. The new four-story tower includes 40 inpatient beds dedicated to women’s services to include labor/delivery beds, postpartum beds and two C-section suites.

The four-story building will provide connections to the existing hospital and to the new Children’s Hospital Colorado being built 60 feet away. Both projects are scheduled to open in 2019. The construction helps Memorial Hospital North, which opened as a small community hospital in 2007, to continue growing into a full-service medical campus, offering acute care and clinical trials to patients in northern El Paso County. The design team members included EYP, GE Johnson, Project One, Gallun Snow, SLR Consulting Martin/Martin Inc. Lerch Bates, N.E.S. Colorado, Classic Consulting Engineers & Surveyors, AEI, Worrell Design Group, Mazetti, St. Onge, Jensen Hughes fd2s and CPP, Inc.
