IIDA Unveils Winners of 6th Annual Healthcare Interior Design Competition

CHICAGO, Ill. – The International Interior Design Association announces the winners of the 2017 Healthcare Interior Design Competition. This competition honors and celebrates outstanding originality and excellence in the design and furnishings of healthcare interior spaces.

“Commercial interior designers play a critical role in the healthcare industry, providing Evidence-Based solutions that contribute to positive patient outcomes and the well-being of caregivers and healthcare employees,” said IIDA Executive Vice President and CEO Cheryl S. Durst, Hon. FIIDA, LEED AP. “This year’s winners exemplify exceptional healthcare design that puts patients and their caregivers at ease while creating positive, healing environments.”

The jury panel reviewing this year’s competition included Carol Doering, IIDA, AAHID, CID, LEED AP, healthcare lead, IA Interior Architects; Lisa Herriott, IIDA, LEED AP ID+C, interior designer, project manager, UW Medicine | Harborview Medical Center and Tiana Lemons, IIDA, NCIDQ, EDAC, healthcare studio leader, orcutt | winslow.

The jury was impressed by the caliber of submissions to this year’s competition. “In healthcare facilities, offering a welcoming, yet professional environment requires a balance of design elements. The winning entries all showcased inviting, warm spaces designed to evoke feelings of calm and comfort,” said Doering.

This year’s competition also featured the first Transformation and Innovation Award, which recognizes a project leading the industry and advancing healthcare outcomes. Parra-Müller Arquitectura de Maternidades in Madrid, Spain, was presented with the Transformation and Innovation Award for the Natural Birth Unit at University Hospital HM Nuevo Belén project in Madrid, Spain.

The Best of Competition winner will be announced and all winners will be celebrated at an awards reception on Monday, Nov. 6, in the IDEA Studio at IIDA Headquarters in Chicago, Illinois. Winning projects are featured on the IIDA website.
